Action for Boston Community Development is established.

March 31, 1961

Originally the Boston Community Development Program, it is a “Gray Areas Project” funded by the Ford Foundation, the Permanent Charity Fund (later the Boston Foundation) and others. Its purpose is to address “the human side of urban renewal.” The organization assumes its current name in June 1961. Charles Liddell is the first director. The organization subsequently becomes Boston’s official antipoverty agency with headquarters at 178 Tremont Street. It continues to operate today.
